There's no question there's a lot of content here, especially with all the special game modes, and I'd still call this a decent rogue-like.

This game recalls some of that in me, but similarly reminds me that most of those games didn't have a ton of depth. Something about the survival elements mixed with taking down hordes of zombies was appealing to me. I'm reminded of some of the zombie flash games from back in the day. You can't win the siege events without adequate weapons and sometimes the game doesn't give you the opportunity to get them. Not that the game is overly unfair, it's just random. So winning was just a matter of not getting a random event that would destroy my progress.
#DEATH ROAD TO CANADA MULTIPLAYER HOW TO#
I quickly figured out how to maneuver around the zombies and what stats were the most important (fitness and strength). It's the type of simplistic combat that's good enough for a few hours or some co-op, but doesn't really stand on it's own. As for the moment to moment gameplay, it's nothing special. That's the problem with RNG taken this far. Most of the RNG just results in crisis management, death, or unearned rewards. There's fantastic potential for these moments, in my opinion they were few and far between. You trust one of your characters from the start of a run-who has been a dependable asset in the combat sections-to than immediately turn on you and join the bandits they were meant to distract, all while the game goes "Terry's loyalty has been revealed!". A party system where important aspects of their character, like loyalty or attitude, are obscured until a situation arises that requires it. There's a lot of effort put into the variety of encounters and character, but both the core combat and this game's brand of RNG get old fast. But I'm not sure it stands the test of time as a solid tertiary gameplay loop. I remember playing Oregon Trail 2 as a kid and having fond memories of it. And it's not a bad version of that either. 60% PCObligatory "this game is a rogue-lite Oregon Trail with zombies and character management" observation.
